Gotta seek balance in times of uncertainty. Thinking about Pam will break your heart but this article here might warm it whole again.

Immortal Soul
- by Sarah Godfrey

Big ups to Sarah for an excellent Black History Month moment, one that provides a lot of pride for any artist that represents the continuum of D.C. music.

How 'bout I was reading the article on the DC All-Stars which was talking about William DeVaughnn's classic "Be Thankful..." as a Massive Attack remake of aforementioned song was playing on my iTunes at work? Strangely ironic. Good article, also.
PS- Don't forget to check out the brand new banger from www.illpoets.com, All Seasons, featuring Hip Hop, R&B and Spoken Word tracks from some of DC's hottest talent, including 13 of Nazareth, W. Ellington Felton, and Black Picasso of the Poem-Cees. You can cop the LP from illpoets.com!

Some of my favorite nights in this town have started out trying to cure a case of the blues, or seeking a respite from general life frustrations. If all else failed, I could make my way to a seat at the bar at U-Topia, cop a brew and a tasty plate and be unfailingly set right again by the stylings of the lovely lady below.

And now she's gone. By her own hand.

D.C. has just lost a precious treasure.

Pam, you brought joy to so many but you must have been in so much pain.

R.I.P.

WPFW PledgeDrive/Brown/Wammies

HEY!!!
(sup y'all)

as you know, WPFW 89.3 just started playing good hip hop music in a show called DECIPHER which airs from 11:00-Midnight Monday thru Friday

what you probably don't is that:
-it was an epic struggle to get the show on the air

-the studio DECIPHER uses has been physically sabotaged every week (by those who oppose the show's presence at the station)

-there are WPFW folks actively campaigning to remove the show from the air, because they feel hip hop is of absolutely no value to the community. and by community, they mean YOU.

that's just a taste of what the intrepid DECIPHER staff (which includes DJ Stylus' Soul Controllers crew) is facing... and they will not fight ugly with ugly, if for no other reason
than because hip hop ALWAYS loses that battle.

But there is a way we can help CONTRIBUTE to the good fight:

CALL IN DURING THE SHOW TO PLEDGE
phone #: 202 588 9739
time of show: 11:00 to Midnight, Monday thru Friday

or, PLEDGE$$ ONLINE!!!!!

-give what you can y'all, but most importantly, GIVE. this is how they determine who REALLY wants to listen to a "progressive hip hop show", and ya better believe that folks are actively rooting against ECIPHER...

in other more positive news on the DC hip hop & poetry front, a cadre of us professional yakkers made the journey up to Brown University for a marvelous event at the Rites & Reason Theater, put on by DC's own Sage Morgan-Hubbard. included on the bill were John Murillo, Oke Iweala, Jason Reynolds and POEM-CEES... and if ya happen to see any of us walking around with BROWN sweatshirts on, it's cuz we're actually BROWN, moreso than us being honorary ivy cats now!

and finally, congratulations to the following folks for their Washington Area Music Award nominations (winner denoted by *):

RAP/HIP HOP Categories:

RAPPER
Blyss
Flex Matthews
Head-Roc
Priest da Nomad
* Storm the unpredictable

DUO/GROUP
O.U.O
Opus Akoben
* Poem-cees

DJ Geometrix
DJ Dirty Hands
* DJ Stylus

RECORDING
Everyday/Pro-Shoppe
Metaphorically Speaking/Charasmatic
Party Time/Bloodshot
* The Return of Black Broadway/ Head-Roc
Unsolved/LK

that's all for now,

except for this:
CALL IN DURING THE SHOW TO PLEDGE
phone #: 202 588 9739
time of show: 11:00 to Midnight, Monday thru Friday

or, PLEDGE$$ ONLINE!!!!!

i'm seriously asking for your assistance- give what ya can, and we'll
buy you a donut later...

easy,
POEM-CEES

ps: look for Mello D's new video, "Cool Witchu" on BET Rap City,
starting this week- congratulations, homie!!!

just found wpfw, and have been reading about the history of all the shit that has gone down. glad that they kept the jazz, but I am so fucking pumped that now there is alternative hiphop on a real radio station here in DC (I host a show on WGTB at Gtown but we're internet only). New to DC (sept. for grad school), glad to finally be discovering a real hiphop scene and not just schwag clubs playing played out club hits. btw, saw you guys with jean grae and shit was mad dope. will definitely be listening to decipher, soon as money is straight I'll donate some cash. big ups,
