The prophecy has come to pass. When I called it, I didn't know that a Tuesday night trip to Baltimore would be the impetus for DP's purchase and consumption of a Monterey Jack and Jalapeno Taquito at the South Capitol St. 7-11. I seent it with mine own eyes.
Just call me The Prognosticator.

BANG! POW! ZOOM!
I got blindsided by dope hip-hop! Holy "don't call it a comeback" Batman!
This is no regular occurence. The only thing worse than shitty popular records are shitty underground/indie records, and there's just a shitload more of the latter. As much as I might choke back bile due to a L'il Flip or a Chingy, these days I'm much more likely to buy and enjoy a Ludicris record than say, something that comes out on Fat Beats. Generally though, the state of jonts to get excited about is pretty abysmal regardless of which side of the realness Maginot Line we're talking about.
Some days, I do Hip-Hop Penance. This consists of clicking endlessly on sound samples on HipHopSite.com, or browsing the bins at DJ Hut and Capital City Records. Or reading all the reviews in URB and tracking down all these random ass groups and then being completely confused as to why said groups get such a gonad fondling in the music press. I'll ask the peeps in the stores to tell me about the rows of hip-hop 12-inches lining the walls, beseeching them to point me to something good, cuz dammit I'm a dj and I need new records that are good. I have a freakin' radio show to feed. I have to get around to Headphone Addiction Vol. 2 someday. It's penance because I dread it, because I can spend a couple of hours slogging through boring record after boring record. I might only find ONE that's decent enough to play, let alone put some money on. I'm actually mad that I can needle drop on a record for just a few seconds and know whether or not it's good. It shouldn't be that easy. I keep doing it because I have to, there's always the chance that a pleasant surprise is waiting.
I was doing my thing on Friday at DJ Hut, chasing the elusive Decent Hip-Hop 12-inch (which should be on the endangered species list) when they played the most wonderous thing in the store. It sounded like one of the most distinctive voices to come out of the mid-90's indie explosion. It sounded like the author of the classic "Brooklyn Kids" and "Funk Soul Sensation". It definitely did not sound like the material of that rapper's post-"Scars & Pain" era, which was pretty abysmal. This cat sounds hungry, confident and invigorated. And the beats... they weren't the standard sparse boom-bip dirges of underground-land nor were they the synthed-out skittering bleeps and blips of the current commercial style. There were big drums, and loops, and layered samples, but it didn't sound like throwback rap (ie: Ugly Duckling).
Ghetto Pop Life. (don't put too much weight on that overly preachy review though).
The return of Jemini the Gifted One teamed up with a DJ/producer who goes by the name of Dangermouse and walks around in a furry mouse suit. I don't even have the album yet, I've just been driving around with the promo sampler in my deck and getting psyced. How did I not see this coming? I must be slipping on my awareness levels. Part of me is grateful for the surprise, it reawakens that part inside every hip-hop head that can remember when an amazing new record was always just around the corner.
Big ups to dope new music. Which reminds me of my next point.
Melody is the jont. Did y'all know that Dapp Theory had a new jont out? Neither did I, since Kokayi didn't tell me, although he's on there teamed up with Bruce Cockburn. These are the type of things you can find out on the humble by just walking into your local independent music retailer and scanning the nearest shelf. And I walked out with a decently priced copy of Style Wars. Word to gratuitous overspending on my alotted personal entertainment budget.

feelin Chuck D today...
I've got so much trouble on my mind
...refuse to lose!
here's your ticket
hear the drummer get wicked!
…I don’t know about later & for now I know how to avoid the paranoid
Man I’ve had it up to here/gear I wear got ‘em goin’ in fear
Rhetoric said & read just a bit ago
& now I’m quick to design the hard rhyme…
…Known as fair & square throughout my years
So I growl at the livin’ foul
Black to the bone My Home Is Your Home
But welcome to the terrordome…
…Never to say I never knew I had a crew
Word was heard plus hard on the boulevard
Lies scandalizin’ bassin’
Troops are hatin’ celebratin’ with Satan
I rope-a dope a demon with righteous bobbin’ & weavin’
& let the good get even (come on down)
and welcome to the terrordome…
…I don’t smile in the line of fire I go wildin’
But it’s on bass & drums even violins
What ya do is get ya head ready
Instead of getting’ physically sweaty
When I get mad I put it down on a pad
Give ya somethin’ that ya never had
Controllin’ fear of high rollin
God bless ya souls & keep livin’
Never allowed kickin’ it loud
Droppin’ a bomb brain game intellectual Vietnam
Move as a team never move alone…
So welcome to the terrordome

Dear Sir,
It is SUCH a coincidence that you have reached out to me at such an opportune time as I am in similar dire straits. You see, I myself am the SOLE HEIR TO THE ROYAL THRONE OF ZAMUNDA and have recently been depleted of my travel expenses here in the U.S., thanks to my irresponsible & foolhardy manservant SIMI. I do have part-time employment at a nearby fast-food establishment though, and while I am actually a man of simple means, I've recently become enamored with the managers daughter, & to be honest, I need to impress this chick. So do me a solid, please & get the message to KING JOFFEY JO'FER that I need 20 million U.S. dollars wired to me, & then we'll talk about your little money problem, cool?
Zamunda's right up the street from COTE D'IVOIRE - look it up on mapquest.

get with the fly shhhhh...

or, as Risiskat of Lil SoSo would (and did) say:
“All of the Above” feat. J-Live
Join as part of Howard University's homecoming celebration. J-Live will be the guest dj spinning hip-hop/soul sets all night along with DJs Adrian, Jahsonic and Stylus adding their own special touches throughout the night. Multimedia artist Ayo will be displaying a video collage of found and manipulated images using advanced computer software on the big screen.
There will also be a special edition of Kat’s Korner featuring “Tapestry.” This improvisational mélange entails the 'vibe conductor' DJ Stylus and live instrumentation serving as the “loom” for which various hip-hop, soul, jazz and spoken word artists weave a musical tapestry.
No preparation or rehearsal, just creativity in its purest form.
Hosted by DP Naturalaw (Poemcees)*
Including:
JaHipster
Andaiye Scott(Devine Nature)
Hebru
Tamara Wellons
Showtime 9:30pm

stephen a. baby...
the perfect situation would've been espn holding firm to their 'rush is free to express his opinion' stance AND rush quitting- thus limiting rush's opportunity to claim "martyr at the hands of liberal media" status. unfortunately, espn threw 'rush-ophiles' a bone and chastised him on the way out.
as it stands, rush will claim that he was sacrificed...but he did QUIT.
i only hope that the media continues to hammer that point home- he "dixie chicked" himself, then quit (please don't use the word 'resigned')
word?
word.
now, adding on to the list i've started at "www.overdueshoutouts.com":
ladies and gentleman, the creative process is a muthaf#ck@...
we spent a lot of time threading together various strands of mania, mayhem, madness and neurosis into an album- PARANOIA
looking back on it, we've arrived at this conclusion
*coolly looks back & forth- boldly clenches genitalia*
it's dope.
*quickly unzips/re-zips fly, throws arms back, screams like michael jackson*
yeah, i said it- PARANOIA is a dope album.
however, looking back, i (dp) also arrived at a simultaneous conclusion:
-the sum of the album is greater than it's individual parts
-the first 5 tracks are "chin-strokers" (make ya say 'hmmmm')
-it is the hip hop equivalent of pink floyd's 'dark side of the moon', which means that as good as it may be- it's not the album you reach for when it's time to flex at a backyard BBQ...
nevertheless, i cherish those times when someone "GETS IT"
thus, the "GOT IT" award...
the inaugural winner of the award is famed washington post music critic Richard Harrington
subsequent winners include:
-Komplex & Droopy ('it's road music' category)
-Sage Francis ('it's well executed' category)
-Chauncey Canfield ('headphone music' category)
-Brent Elrod & Vin Robust, on our cdbaby.com page ('it's a creeper/keep listening!' category)
-leslye james ('"jay" made me cry' category)
and the latest winner?
...drum roll please...
CONGRATULATIONS, DEBE NEVES!!!
you are the winner of the 'found it INSTANTLY ACCESSIBLE' category!
now, a little chowdah birdie gave me testimonials as to the impact "keloid suite" had on you, as well as your rare ability to listen to a whole album in one sitting (don't sleep- the napster/kazaa generation doesn't 'do' albums), but we really wanna focus our congratulations and "thank you's" on the fact that you pressed play and dug it from the jump.
nobody does that.
sheesh- come to think of it, what's wrong with you?
at any rate, big-ups, you new bedford-ite turned california girl...DEBE NEVES, YOU "GOT IT"
easy,
dp, aka Hawk-Eye For The Ass, Guy
ps. special shout out to all the people who said "uh, so far i've only heard the first 4 tracks"...
pps. extra special shout to the folks who slept on meshell's "bitter" album
ppps. full-tilt drunken master shout outs to everyone who critically listened...and still didn't like it. i'm cool with y'all
pppps. you got something to say? SAY IT!!!
