On the heels of that treatise about good things not existing in a vacuum where they don't need patronage to survive, and to simultaneously address the random inquisitors asking about my current dj'ing whereabouts....

Go to
DC Sanctuary everyone!

It's a nice cozy spot with progressive, non-mainstream music. It's run by our peeps for the enjoyment of all and will definitely satisfy those shake-a-leg cravings that aren't addressed by the lounge environment (although it has that too).

I will be there this Saturday and (hopefully) the last Saturday of every month along with Adrian Loving and JahSonic. All flavors of melinated good-vibe music from classic funk & soul to hip-hop, african styles and modern blacktronica.

You can keep up with more non-band related Stylus dj'ing exploits at Worldsflyest.com.

GOOD TIMES, by naturalaw-dp

September 24th, 2003:
Thea's Blues & Jazz Club

Winston-Salem.

Shon- writer/catalyst.

hospitality. hotel 'n all that...

cool ass band.

people in the place

gloria's pussy & dick cakes (please ask me about these)

Newcastle & Grand Marnier

...and i'm wondering why that was the last night of the "Words & Music" Wednesdays at Thea's. granted, wednesday isn't the best night to heavily support your local bar- but neither is sunday and i know of many cities where sunday night is "black people night" at the club.

spots come and go; 'round DC we've seen State of the Union, Metro Cafe, Kaffa House, The Bayou, and It's Your Mug evaporate into thick-ass muggy chocolate city air...

i'd love to tell all my performing homies to make that trek to NC for a dope set.
"yo- main man at the door was from SoufWes! they shakin' down there..."

but alas, we lost another one y'all. Shon hit the bullseye talking 'bout how we get mad about 'stolen culture', when in reality we just let shit go...and then what?

write a new page?
change the game?
only to let it go... again

practice holding on to something y'all
property, worthwhile relationships, venues, books, hell- EVERYTHING BUT GRUDGES (which many of y'all capably clutch with a kung fu grip)

had a good time in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at Thea's Blues & Jazz Club on the last night of Words & Music Wednesdays

i'ma hold on to that

easy,
dp

ps. $upport $upport $upport what you dig

HOW ABOUT SOME HARDCORE!!!

Go
here.
Scroll down almost to the bottom (or just do a find for 'stylus').
Revel in my fearsome ruggedness!!!!

Y'all don't even understand. I'ma come out that jont in full nosferatu regalia, Vlad Dracul is in the mix COMEONKICKIT!! Pass the absinthe.

Big ups to more press, and no deaths by umbrella impalement. And no broken needles either. Geyeah.

Also, big ups to memories of 9:30 Club gigs in days past. I'll include the relevent bits to save you the trouble:

Arlington, Va: Hey-I went to see Arrested Development at the 9:30 Club on Sunday. I was shocked--the place was nearly 2/3 empty and was basically full of white dreadlocked hippie types. Not that I have anything against them, I just did not ever figure them into AD's primary audience. I cannot believe that the show went on with the place that starkly empty.

On another note, one of the opening acts, the poem-cees, were FABULOUS. Kind of spoken-word, hip-hop, old school vibe thing going on. I cannot believe I never heard of these DC-based guys. Have you seen them? Witty and talented. I was glad to have paid the $15 for AD just to have caught this act!!!

David Segal: Never seen them, but thanks for the tip.

A bit of a digression if I may though... why do mad people call us "old school"? Well, Pic does betray the influence of Melle Mel at times, and we do have a routine that we rock over "Apache" but it seems that we have a publicist we don't even know about who is flooding every contact in their database with press releases urging folks to come see D.C.'s Wondrous Fossils of Old School Hip-Hop.

We have a few theories but what do y'all think? Should we just thrown on leather zorro hats, young ass white shorts and studded wristbands (a la Whodini's "Freaks Come Out at Night") video and call it a day? DJ Grandmaster Dee had the green eyes though, but DP rhymes and I spin. This poses a quandry.

IT IS MY GAWD-GIVEN RIGHT TO CHANGE MY MIND

Too many people see that as weakness or waffling, but I like to think that I keep convertible headed (rewind edit, I mean I’m) open minded enough to re-evaluate my earlier judgements.

With that in mind, I want to say in print that Floetry is NOT wack. They most definitely have a cool vibe and they make some pretty damn sexy songs. I just thought that the concept & the name was kinda goofy & contrived, but then I remembered, MY group is called POEM-CEES
*

The other thought I’ve recently rescinded is the long-term value of one Robert Kelly*. I’ve heard that this new Chocolate Factory album was phenomenal, but I kinda expected this one to be his best. I figured that he absolutely NEEDED to pull a hail mary anyway in order to save his scorched career.

…but here’s my thing….

“step in the name of love” is one of the greatest songs I’ve heard in years
From the moment I heard him hit that Marvin Gaye*-like “whoooa” on the remix, I realized just how Marvin-ish R. Kelly* really is. That joint is gorgeous, and I am officially a believer. Just like Puffy* always says, he really AIN’T goin’ nowhere! Go ahead & put an asterisk next to his name in history books if you want to, but R. Kelly* WILL be in there, & besides, most people in the history books got one anyway.

So there you have it, I can be man enough to admit that I’ve made one or two hasty judgments before, change with the times & humbly reverse my position.

But you will never, EVER get me to use the words “conversate” or “irregardless” in (serious) conversation…that just ain’t changing.

In honor of all Things That Are Good (rather than Things that are Falling Apart, or Things that F**king Suck, of which there are presently way more than would be prudent to share), I offer this partial list:

- 3 indie releases, one platinum major label debut, both of which were extremely slept-on by me, until they dropped
Rosa Parks 2003, which is currently my favorite song.

- hometown youngsters that spent mad time in the shed, growed up and made good. We're proud of you my friend, just make sure you watch out for "wack dudes". And give us a beat already.

- No Edge-Ups in South Africa

- Chicken

- Beer (particularly the Hefeweizen and Apricot Ale... yum!)

- Chicken & Beer

- the September 2003 issue of URB Magazine (with Outkast on the cover, which might no longer be on newstands) that has a review of POEM-CEES' "Paranoia" on page 102. Big up Craig Smith. We will have to scan and post the review shortly.

- Opus is coming back!! Not that Opus (although I've heard they're cooking up some thangs). I'm talking about the O.G. Opus.

- Arrival of TamRock jont is imminent... stay tuned.

- my momma, Daniel Askari Washington, Lil SoSo an' em, D'Salaam aka "Big Bank Billiam" aka "Buster the Mastiff", Tank Green, Han Bullet and Cukipapa (the Holy Brit Triumvirate), Lauren McBride and Mr. Parisi
