i posted this elsewhere in a discussion about the decline in r&b lyricism, so excuse me for being lazy...
but,
me and my partners used to have contests to see who could come up with the illest, most ridiculous r&b lyrics imaginable, around '95 or so.
now, that we have an archive of gems such as:
"i'm iiinteresteeed,
in haaaaaving kids
-with your mother...
or, who could forget classics like:
"you can see the gloooow
from myyyy peeee-hole,
my urinary tract is burnin'
...for your loooooooooove..."
(note: this was the remixed doo-wop version)
we feel sufficiently confident that were we lacking in conscience, you're lookin' at tomorrow's hits today...
damn.
no 'wonder' stevie ain't really recording anymore

The nice Jesus ladies got me.
I mean, I don't have anything against Jesus. We could sit and kick it about philosophy and such over a six-pack of cider. I just get 'noided about peoples' motives when they claim to be acting on his behalf.
I'm pushing the whip down the good Ager Road in the 'Ville (Hyattsville, Whut!?!), it's about 85 degrees. I see her standing on the median in an immaculate starched white nurse/pseudo-military auxiliary uniform. Her counterpart is holding down Riggs. I pull up right when the light turns red, she makes her approach. She's middle aged and speaking heavily accented spanglish, something about needing help for the Christian missionaries. I turn down the blaring cd of rough drafts of new POEM-CEES songs and automatically slip her a dollar before I could even make an assessment of the worthiness of the donation. She returned the favor with a tract detailing how I needed Jesus in my life. This is when I realized that the mental programming I received at the feet of the Cuban nuns in my catholic elementary school was stronger than I ever accounted for. Despite my secular humanist leanings, deep down inside I knew that I would be damned to the worst furnaces of hell if I didn't give this agent of God some loot. I would never leave dear old Sr. Margarita hanging if she was standing in the sun in full nun gear and needed a couple of bucks.
You might think I'm odd, but I'm only posting this because DP could probably write a song about its deeper meanings. Oh, would y'all please 2-way me? I don't want to be the only one with no responses.

It's all game...
Maybe I need a late pass, but I'm just now paying attention to how deceptive some songs are...
"yo everybody wears the mask but how long will it last?" - Lauryn
Sometimes cleverly hidden, other times just thinly veiled, our ulterior motives & dirty little plots are covered in song.
"I'm not trying to pressure you, just can't stop thinking 'bout you, you ain't even really gotta be my girlfriend" - Musiq
come on, y'all niggas 'aint slick
"you know it's drama, but it sounds real good" - Ice Cube
yo it sounds good, though, smart lyrics & entendres with our true intentions peeking out thru the music...
but it's getting REAL deep now...
I know I know I'm rambling, but lissen....
I submit to you that when it comes to game, the soon to be ghetto classic "What's Love" by Fat Joe & Ashanti is one of the biggest players ever. And it wins.
The song is bi-polar - or schizophrenic or something - check it
Ashanti (The new Queen of Hip-Hop Soul - what? you didn't get the memo?) sweetly sings "what's luuuuuv....It's about us, It's about trust, babe" providing a hook that all us sentimental saps can get with. Now all that's left is to add some heartfelt lyrics to detail the complexities of maintaining a relationship, maybe the struggle of temptation & the pain of a breakup....
right???
Nah FUCK THAT PUNK SHIT!!!
For da next three minutes my dog Joe's gonna take y'all bitches around the globe - flossin' like a dirty dentist, eating filet mingon with a plastic spork in a bathtub fulla curvoisier while giving it to you rough, rugged, and raw AND your girl can come too! Whatd'ya say?
....and I'm not hatin' - I'm just in awe
because it works on so many levels
hmmm... take some despicable lyrics & give them a pretty hook....
but on the other hand, wasn't nothing pretty about Nate Dogg singing "It 'aint no fun If my homies can't have none" except for his voice and THAT micky-vicky ROCKED the club EVERYTIME!
...so maybe I deserve that late pass.
I'll shut up now - Let's just dance
Pic!

i talked to a friend today.
she told me she prefers movies to music, and considers music to be mere background filler...
if given a choice between watching videos and listening to music, which would she choose?
-surprise: listening to music;
videos would force her to waste time watching music;
at least when you're listening music, you can multi-task and make good use of that time
cuz that's all music is to her- white noise in the background...
she is not uncommon
actually, she is quite common in this viewpoint
many folks are looking for an escape
visual mediums which can vividly convey storylines are the preferred mode of escapism
this would include: TV shows, movies, and (to a lesser degree) books
if you're reading this, you probably love music. or you love one of us. maybe both.
it is sooooo easy to NOT seek out our music
radio tells you about many artists who are NOT us...
tv does the same
magazines, newspapers, advertisements...
YOU WON'T BE BOMBARDED WITH POEM-CEES(yet)
yet some folks still check in to see what's crackin'...
for that, i gotta thank you. you're making my life's work faintly relevant.
and right now, that means more to me than...
now- soon this will change. you will be bombarded with POEM-CEES
we'll be doing many shows
we'll ask you to buy the new record(s)
dj's will have (and hopefully play) our single
buy the t-shirt
slap up a sticker
come check the tour
blahblahblahblahblah...
but for now? shorty, we gotta keep mashin'
muchos appreciation for peepin' us out now...
when we really need y'all
sincerely,
dp

It's me again, and I've been listening to you. I've been out and about in your places of business, I've been in your homes, your vehicles, sitting near you on the train. I've listened to your phone conversations. I know your laments. I know the empty hole you carry deep in your hearts. You need a special spot, just for you and your like-minded friends. When your not-so-like minded but well-meaning friends ask you to come along to *insert cavernous homegenous radio playlist bourgie club name here*, where you can shake your ass to the newest J-Lo ditty, you might accept their offer, just to spend some time with the girls/homies. You choke back your occasional fantasy of just one 4 Hero tune coming on so you can really bust a move. You didn't want to wear that nice dress and those open-toed heels anyway, just to get your toes stepped on and a drink spilled on you by an over-zealous hot breath bamma begging for your number. Oh, and you really didn't feel like running the gauntlet of the mad ass grabbers and the "psst, hey youngin come here... F**K YOU THEN!" Fellas, you didn't want your wallet to go on Jenny Craig like that, and you got played like a wet food stamp by the doorman? But what can you do? Sit at home and eat Ben & Jerry's? I mean, sure you go to shows and such, you love music and you like seeing the musicians perform live. You see kindred spirits at these shows. But what about just having a spot to chill or shake a leg if you like? What about having your eardrums surrounded by the tunes that usually only caress you in your walkman? Imagine the validation of a room full of people with the same blissful smiles, heads nodding and hips swaying to what feels like your personal record collection. You like a little Curtis Mayfield with your Masters at Work. You like some Prince with your Unspoken Heard, some Stevie Wonder, Sergio Mendes, Slum Village, Herbie Hancock, Mos Def, Loose Ends, Femi Kuti, Fertile Ground, Flora Purim, Blaze, Raphael Saddiq, Blue Six, hell... even some classic Rare Essence or L'il Benny. It's all soul music anyway, right?
Look, I got you. For real. Every Thursday. Come see me, my night's called Synergy. I already converted my first batch of believers last week. Come as you are.
