this saturday 6/2/01- FREE SHOW @ DCCD 2423 18th St. Nw. (heart of Adams Morgan)
-come on out for the loose-jam session
and now...Reflections Of My Memorial Day Weekend:
man, back in the day everybody used to beatbox. i mean, EVERYBODY use to beat box.
for real.
plus cats knew how to kill time while the technical difficulties were sorted out. none of that "yo, somebody fix that shit or somebody's gettin' fucked up!" madness, all loud and on-mic so the whole crowd knows you're 'bout to lose it...
everybody seemed to have choreography of some sort- maybe a little motion to freak an element of their lyrics, or possibly a little introduction, so they didn't just come onstage and stumble aimlessly about...
cats got busy back in the day, with all types of tactics designed to get the crowd open...
and i was lucky enough to see some of those cats over memorial day weekend in providence, ri
the lineup was...ahem- get your drool bibs in place please:
-force md's (still hittin' high notes)
-nice & smooth (greg nice is a bellowing ox of an mc who has one function- rock parties. that's it.)
-dana dane (did 5 or 6 songs- can you even name 5 dana dane songs?)
-special ed (looks the same- plus 50 pounds)
-stetsasonic (prince paul on the wheels, daddy-o/fruitkwan/delight on the mic, bobby simmons on drums- damn)
-utfo (thanks to dana "just one mo' song" dane, their time got cut short- but they RIPPED it; 1 of 2 that crushed their set)
-big daddy kane (of course he was the other crusher- dude still got it: LONG LIVE THE KANE)
-slick rick (all he had to do is step on stage and cats lost it- started with the joint he did with outkast, finished with children's story)
all that for $20 bucks. in a club smaller than the 9:30, bigger than the black cat. 5000 people in line. pissed off. not gettin' in...
big ups to advance ticket purchases! 'The Revolution Is Hip Hop' Tour- coming soon to a city near you...
easy,

nikka costa nikka costa nikka costa
-ain't that some sh*t? jennifer lopez renounced the ass, and now nikka's gonna blow up off of it...
matter of fact, she done rubbed out all reasons for j-lo to exist in the music scene- i mean, who needs a non-funky, lesser-talent, ass-hider like ditty-diddy bang-bang's ex when you can get some ol' janis joplin 2000 isht, complete with backfield and a bugged out web site?
of course i haven't even heard the record yet, so i reserve the right to kick nikka and her pfat australian booty to the curb if she ain't reppin' more than some pleasing imagery...
-i'm talking to patrick right now while blogging to whoever the freak reads this stuff. blah blah blah says patrick. man, he doesn't even realize that i'm not listening to him. conan blah blah blagh blagh sopranos blah blah blah blurk blurk. this is what you call multi-tasking: pretending to be in a phone conversation while typing meaningless drivel on a website that nobody reads. another way of putting that is: what is (nothing)/negative x 0? so lemme get off this dead-end thought train...
-big shout outs to daniel j. perry for picking up the new 2001 RAV 4 joint- once again, d-younger trumps d-midborn, who stays pimpin' on the metro train with the vanity plates (NODOHMC)...viva la public transpo!!!
-heard isabella banneker was gonna be at the mother's milk joint. WHY AM I ALWAYS OUT OF TOWN WHEN THESE JOINTS ARE GOIN' DOWN? I'M TRYIN' TO SEE THAT WHOLE REPERTOIRE...really. but it ain't gonna be this week- big ups to all those milky mama's for doing their thing- moonshine, nikki jean, soulstice, liberty, kima, rah sunday, and urrbody else...
-memo to rev. george stallings: YOU'RE BUGGIN'!!! no doubt about it. you couldn't have flaked any harder if you were tony 'the dandruff-plagued' tiger...
-big ups to priest the nomad, sammy davis jr., organized konfusion's first album, e-rule 'synopsis', the abacus, and crazy wisdom masters...

It's deja vu all over again...
A little over a year ago, DJ Stylus, along with Irk and Jerk sat around in awe, eyes bugged like Manntann, jaws agape, lips forming wide 'O's of amazement like Cro-Magnons first experiencing fire.
A thousand copies of 'IOU Street' had arrived from Discmakers, all shrinked-wrapped and packed in rows in a big ass stack of shipping boxes. We cracked them open and pondered the marvel of our achievement. Look! Those are our shout-outs! Knee-grows actually made a CD. We sat and stared, time stood still. Eventually brought back to reality like Soul II Soul (or Tragedy in pre-Khadafi days even), we realized that we have to get out and hustle these shits like crackrocks in a mid-80's D.C. open air drug market or else they're nothing but a monolith of plastic and cardboard disturbing the gravitational center of DP's bedroom. SLANG A JONT SLANG A JONT!! If y'all bammas is up on stage and don't say "CD's on sale in the back", I'ma put my foot in your behinds and dangle you over the edge of the balcony like my man in 5 Heartbeats ("My office hours are from 9... to 5...")
I relived this all over again on Monday, when 500 copies of my mix cd, Headphone Addiction Vol. I arrived. Except I'll have to put my foot in my own ass if I don't hustle these jonts cuz it's a Stylus production. P. Dub and DeePee make an appearance of course, and it'll be a joint sales crusade, but the onus is really on me. And you know what? I like it like that. I now have an answer to "why don't you have any mixtapes out?". I have some shit that represents me, with the songs I like in a mix set of my personal style. It's not a wild-out hyper skratching turntablist extravaganza, or a Scratch-N-Scream Clue-fest of EXCLUSIVES!! and HOT SHIT!! but it's me and I am pleased. It's not timely but I hope it's timeless. (Hi Leslye!) Big shouts to my man Cyrus for making the visuals look professional. Much love to the first intrepid consumers that copped my joint on Monday at Bar Nun. It's now in Yoshitoshi too so y'all go out and make me look good.
Now stay tuned for more random shout-outs...
-Big ups to W. Ellington's blazing new joints (Art!Hurts mickie-fickies!!)
-Big ups to strolling through downtown DC on a warm spring day appreciating power-suited professional buns and chomping on a Magnum. After first being exposed to these joints back in high school overseas they've finally reached our shores. Let the people rejoice.
- Big ups to Naked Music. What's better, the covers or the music? Who cares? Miguel Migs is a funky white dude though.
- Big ups to YMAN... knucka ain't right, needs Jesus.
- Big ups to Cheryll cuz she's cute and makes me laugh. Stop by her spot and tell her she's a dork.
- Big ups to Old Head Terrapins hanging out on the yard again at the Block Show this past Saturday
- Big ups to the poetry ho massive who convened down at Teaism. All I gotta say is WEAR THE SWEATER!!!
See y'all at Andalu tomorrow
